Our old friend from the tank, Cam Atkinson, scored early on but the goal was waived off because Nick Foligno completely interfered with Chad Johnson.
Zach Redmond made his Sabres debut tonight. He had a pretty rough 1st period despite getting a lot of shots off. He made a brutal pass that was picked off by Cam Atkinson but luckily, Atkinson rang the puck off the pipe. Redmond also took a hooking penalty that gave the Jackets their 1st power play of the game.
On that power play, Oliver Bjorkstrand sniped the puck past a screened Chad Johnson for his 2nd goal of the season. Boone Jenner was planted in front of Johnson all alone with no Sabres players in sight.
Jake McCabe had a glorious scoring chance in the slot late in the 1st but he opted to make a pass to Kyle Okposo instead and that didn’t amount to anything because he was on a bad angle. McCabe has to shoot there. Shortly after that, Sam Reinhart received a great pass backdoor but he just missed wide of the net and the Blue Jackets would hold onto their 1-0 lead going into the 2nd period.
Overall, it was a pretty good 1st for Buffalo but they just couldn’t get the puck past Bobrovsky.
Midway through the 2nd, Ryan O’Reilly was denied by Bobrovsky on the breakaway. The Sabres couldn’t buy a goal to this point. Bobrovsky was terrific tonight. Buffalo’s had plenty of chances but they just can’t beat the Jackets goaltender.
Late in the 2nd, the Jackets made a great transition out of their defensive zone and converted on a nice 3 on 2. Seth Jones gunned the puck past a screened Johnson to put the Jackets up 2-0 for his 2nd goal of the season.
Very shortly after Jones’ goal, Jack Johnson put the puck on net, and the puck bounced off of Nick Foligno’s foot and in the net. The goal would be reviewed but it counted. That was Foligno’s 3rd of the season.
And before you can blink, Matt Calvert shovels the puck home to make it 4-0.
The Sabres had a nice start to the game but in the 2nd, it completely spiralled out of control from there.
The 3rd period was basically a snoozer. Nothing really eventful and it looked like the Sabres mailed it in. Seth Griffith sniped the puck past Bobrovsky to spoil the shutout. The 4th line had their moments tonight. They had their fair share of chances and it was nice to see them get a goal tonight. That was Griffith’s first goal as a Sabre.
Josh Anderson blows past Zach Redmond and ripped it past Johnson to make it 5-1. That would be it for this one.
The Blue Jackets are a really good team but I would’ve liked to see a better showing in the 2nd and 3rd periods. I really liked their game in the 1st. Most of the 2nd and 3rd periods were not very good at all. The Sabres will be back in action on Saturday evening at home against the San Jose Sharks.
