As Free Agency looms and the July 1st date is just around the corner, the Sabres camp has been pretty silent. With the Sabres having a glaring need for defense many have speculated whether or not for the second year in a row they’d make a run at the top free agent.
Elliotte Friedman of HNIC said this morning he believes Buffalo is making a big push for the 28 year old defender:
Friedman on Shattenkirk: “I think Buffalo has made a big play for him.” #Sabres CHED

Shattenkirk put up 57 points in 80 games last season and although he has his moments of uncertainty in the defensive zone he is undoubtedly an elite offensive presence on the back end.
For what’s likely to be a high flying offense that relies on offensive production from the defense, Kevin Shattenkirk would be a clear upgrade over what the Sabres have now, but is the price worth it?
It’s almost certain Shattenkirk will want 7 years and a hefty AAV to go with it so GM Jason Botterill and co. will have to weigh the positives and negatives of dishing out a heavy contract for an immediate upgrade on the blue line.
